Tips for Developing a Website That is Search Engine Optimized

Kyle Roof

Developing a properly search engine optimized website is critical for your website’s and business’ success. It’s perhaps the most effective way to make sure it is working precisely as hard as it should. Below you will find some handy tips for developing a website that is search engine optimized in order to attract more traffic and improve your chances to convert leads into buyers.

What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is a dynamic process that involves the creation of website traffic via search engine results. In other words, among the many things SEO does for your business is to make your site more discoverable by potential customers when they use a search term related to your brand.

Why you need to optimize your site for SEO

SEO is a huge topic to cover and includes a wealth of practices and strategies to promote a website. Some of the reasons why you need to optimize your site for SEO are to:

  • To ensure your site gives your target audience the value they seek and deserve by serving up the best possible content for them.
  • Have search engines rank your best content so you don’t experience a significant drop in traffic (google uses 200+ ranking signals to determine which content should take first place on search engine results).
  • Create a positive website UX (user experience).
  • Grow your organic traffic.
  • Capitalize on existing traffic.
  • Boost conversion rates.

How to develop a search engine optimized website

The following tips will help improve your site’s SEO to draw more traffic.

Tip #1: Analyze your site data

If you start collecting various data from your website, you will immediately see patterns. If, for example, many people visit your site but very few click on your CTA (call to action), then you will probably need to adjust your CTA or content. You can get valuable insight and traffic data-related details from tools like Google Search Console, which also tracks key metrics (i.e., bounce rate, number of unique sessions, etc.). Looking at referral sources will also reveal a lot about how people find your website.

Tip #2: Work on keyword researching

Finding the right business and niche-related keywords and phrases to rank for is vital for your business. Prefer long-tail keywords that match your target audience’s intent. To achieve this, think about what your prospective customers would hope to find on your website when searching for a specific keyword. You can start with something very broad and gradually get into longer-tail keywords. Then you can create pages and content (i.e., in-depth articles) relevant to these keywords to attract a specific audience.

Tip #3: Use the power of words

Producing value-rich and long (ideally over 1,000 words) content sends a signal to Google to pay attention to your website. When people search for the information you provide them via your content and read what you have written to the very end, Google is far more likely to rank your site higher.

Tip #4: Focus on on-page SEO

On-page SEO allows you to optimize your platform when building your website pages. Meta tags, URL slugs, and headlines all fall into this category. Ideally, your primary keyword should appear in your headline, the sub-headline, and the URL slug as close to the beginning as possible. To avoid keyword stuffing, which can have your site banned from Google or down-ranked, it’s suggested not to exceed 2.5% keyword density. You may also include your keyword(s) at the image alt text and throughout your body copy.

Other ways to develop search engine optimized websites:

  • Optimize your site for off-page SEO (i.e., get quality backlinks).
  • Ensure that it’s mobile optimized.
  • Check that your pages load fast. (you may use Google’s PageSpeed Insights to check how fast your site loads).
