Introducing: POP’s New Keyword Research Tools

Over years I developed a killer on page SEO system that we used in our agency to drive millions in client revenue.

It wasn’t simply a ‘keyword goes here’ strategy. Sure, we used POP for part of the process, but what we developed was far more than that. It was about finding the optimum keyword for each target page to rank for.

It was about matching those important site pages to the best silo topics for supporting pages. And it was about finding the keywords a site could quickly rank for based on math & historic data.

The process was long and painful. That’s why our clients would pay us a lot of money for it.

But I always wanted to develop the rest of our on page workflow into features inside POP.

Behind the scenes, we’d been automating and refining bits and pieces of it for a couple of years.

And FINALLY, stage 1 is done!

Introducing POP Keyword Tools, launching on Unlimited & Teams plans in November 2024.

It's not your standard set of Keyword Tools. And in this article I'm going to explain why

An Overview of POP’s Keyword Research Tools

This NEW suite of tools is fully integrated inside POP. So with a few clicks of a button, you can now utilize my science-backed workflow for keyword research and silo creation without the need for spreadsheets and complicated formulas.

Say goodbye to complex analysis and GUESSEO—Our new proprietary Keyword Score pinpoints the best kw opportunities instantly, while our SEO Competitiveness Index shows you exactly how competitive each keyword is, factoring in both on-page and off-page elements

It’s SEO at the speed of science.

Here's a quick rundown of the new keyword research tools inside POP:

Keyword Insight Tool

First up is the Keyword Insight tool. This tool allows you to analyze an existing list of up to 100 keywords in one click using new POP metrics making it easy to identify those hidden gems.

Let’s take a look at how to use the Keyword Insight tool.

Start by creating a new project or opening an existing one in POP, then go to the keyword tools on the right and click "Create New."

Upload your keyword list and submit up to 100 keywords per run for analysis.

The Keyword Insight tool provides both basic and advanced data.

Basic Data includes monthly search volume ranges (high and low), search volume trends, difficulty score, current Google rank, ranking URL, and competition strength.

To access Advanced Data, select one or multiple keywords, then click “Get Advanced Metrics.”

Advanced insights include Keyword Score, Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR) score, SEO Competitiveness Index, and All-in-Title metric. Plus, with AI-powered analysis, you can quickly identify top and supporting keywords to build your content silos.

I really love this feature of the tool, because it makes the entire process of building out your content silos super fast and easy. You can see, the AI-Powered Analysis is even picking out my Top Level & Supporting keywords for me. My keyword selections here are backed by data so there’s no GUESSEO involved.

From here, you can generate a POP report or use the POP AI Writer to create articles for any of the analyzed keywords in your list, directly from the Keyword Insight Dashboard.

Now we’ll take a closer look at the basic metrics inside the Keyword Insight Tool:

Monthly search volume - both high and low

This will show you the range of the monthly high and low search volume for each keyword you have uploaded.

Difficulty score

This metric displays a percentage based on the difficulty of ranking for the given keyword. The higher the percentage, the more difficult the keyword will be to rank for.

Current rank (Google)

This shows what position you are ranking for on Google from your list of keywords.

Current Ranking URL

This displays the URL of your website that is ranked for the given keyword.

Search Trends

This metric shows the monthly percentage increase or decrease in search demand for a given keyword.

When you want to do a deeper analysis, you can take a look at the advanced metrics:

Keyword Golden Ratio Score or KGR

The Keyword Golden Ratio (KGR) is a valuable SEO metric that helps identify low-competition, high-opportunity keywords. It is calculated by dividing the number of Google search results that include the exact keyword phrase in the title by the keyword's monthly local search volume.

The formula for KGR is:

(Number of search results with the keyword in the title / Monthly local search volume) * 100

A KGR value of less than 2.5 indicates a prime keyword opportunity, meaning there is a good chance of ranking in the top 50 search results, especially for newer websites. Keywords with a higher KGR may be more competitive and harder to rank for.

This metric is ideal for finding "hidden gem" keywords with low competition but decent search volume.

Keyword Score

The Keyword Score is a proprietary (POP only), weighted metric designed to highlight the most valuable keywords for your SEO strategy. It combines several important factors, including:

  • Monthly Search Volume: How frequently the keyword is searched for, indicating its popularity and traffic potential.
  • Competition Strength: The level of competition for that keyword in search engine rankings.
  • Keyword difficulty: A calculation of how long it might take for your content to achieve a high ranking for the keyword, factoring in the competition and current ranking positions.

The Keyword Score simplifies decision-making by giving you a clear, color-coded signal. The darker the green, the better the keyword in terms of both opportunity and ease of ranking. Keywords with a high score offer a strong balance of traffic potential and achievable ranking success, making them ideal targets for your SEO strategy.

SEO Competitiveness Index (SCI)

The SEO Competitiveness Index is a proprietary metric that evaluates the level of SEO optimization for a given keyword based on two key factors:

  • Title Optimization Frequency: This represents how many pages explicitly target the keyword in their page titles, signaling intentional optimization. Since the title is one of the most prominent on-page SEO elements, a higher frequency indicates that more competitors are actively targeting the keyword in their on-page strategy.

  • Backlink Anchor Text Relevance: This measures how many external links pointing to various pages use the keyword in their anchor text. When websites receive backlinks with relevant anchor text, it demonstrates a stronger off-page SEO effort, as backlinks are a major ranking factor in search algorithms.

By assessing these two factors together, the SEO Competitiveness Index gives a comprehensive view of how many pages are actively optimized for the keyword, both in terms of on-page elements (title) and off-page elements (backlinks). This can help gauge how much effort competitors are putting into ranking for a specific keyword.

All In Title

This metric shows the number of pages that use the exact keyword in their title tag. A higher number suggests more competition targeting the keyword in in on-page SEO.

About Our AI-Powered Keyword Analysis

Our proprietary algorithm, boosted by AI, identifies top-level and supporting keywords, providing tailored recommendations on content structure.

This unique combination ensures that not only is the selection of keywords data-driven, but it is also strategically aligned with your content goals.

The algorithm works in tandem with AI to analyze the topic and keyword metrics you input, then identifies top-level and supporting keywords. This approach ensures your content hierarchy is optimized for SEO, making it easier to create well-rounded and effective content silos.

Next is our Keyword Strategy Tool, perfect for starting your research from scratch

Keyword Strategy tool

This tool lets you enter up to 10 target keywords or topics, along with up to 20 competitor URLs, to generate clusters of high-quality keywords based on Google suggestions, People Also Ask, and related terms—all backed by keyword data and enhanced by AI.

Here’s how it works: enter your target keyword(s) and competitor URLs, then click "Search Keywords." The tool will analyze and generate clusters of relevant keywords by search intent and similarity.

From this organized output, you can refine clusters, filter results, and identify keywords for building top-level and supporting pages. This provides you with a clear structure for your SEO strategy without needing an initial list of keywords.

A Closer Look at Keyword Clustering

When you enter a topic or a set of keywords into our Keyword Strategy tool, the system doesn’t just give you a basic list of related keywords.

In the backend, these keywords are not simply listed—they are clustered based on their semantic similarity and search intent. This clustering process helps streamline your research by grouping related keywords together, so you can easily identify patterns, trends, and opportunities in keyword targeting.

After clustering, you can manually refine your keyword lists by excluding clusters that don’t align with your strategy or objectives.

Lastly, we have our Keyword Tracker, which takes the guesswork out of monitoring your keyword progress without bogging you down with complicated dashboards.

Keyword Tracker

You'll receive straightforward updates on your keywords, including old rank, new rank, rank changes, monthly search volume, and the current ranking URL. Plus, with email updates, you're always in the loop about any ranking changes.

Using this tracker is simple: just add the keywords you want to monitor, and you’ll see key updates as they happen. No need to dig through data—just clear, actionable insights on your keyword progress.
